Tailings Management
We help address operational and closure issues related to mine tailings.
M&A uses a variety of tools to monitor and manage tailings operations. These tools range from traditional groundwater monitoring networks to data-collection installations that employ depth-specific sensors within impoundments. We also design wellfields to capture groundwater and mitigate the impacts of tailings seepage on downgradient water quality.
In addition, we help clients permit new tailings facilities and comply with permit requirements at operational facilities in accordance with applicable regulations.
| Characterize | Characterize the water balance components of tailing impoundments to evaluate internal drainage as well as seepage into underlying aquifers |
|---|---|
| Characterize ambient groundwater conditions and impacts from tailings operations | |
| Monitor | Monitor hydrologic conditions within impoundments during active tailings deposition |
| Design | Design interceptor wellfields to optimize the capture of impacted groundwater |
| Model | Simulate transport within tailings for closure operations |
| Project the hydraulic capture of tailings seepage to design remedial actions | |
| Comply | Conduct sampling and analyses programs for groundwater, surface water, and soils to ensure regulatory compliance |
| Develop plans and reports to permit new facilities or to ensure compliance at existing ones | |
| Design mitigation measures for regulatory compliance |
